Granny Square

1. What do I do if the colors don't line up?
  • 1. What do I do if the colors don't line up? ( Granny )

Adjust your hook size if you are finding the colors are not lining up after the first two or three rounds. If you don’t have enough yarn in the right shade to complete a round, go down a hook size. If you have too much of one color when a round is complete, go up a hook size.

If the colors are ‘almost’ lining up, try pulling back a few stitches and adjust your tension for the last few stitches to achieve the correct point of color change.

2. Can I use any granny square pattern with this yarn?

4. Can I make the granny squares smaller or bigger?

The yarn is designed to create a 5 round crochet granny square that measures 6” [15 cm] square. You could eliminate rounds in your granny square and stop after 2, 3 or 4 rounds to make smaller squares BUT you need to use the shades in the order they appear from the ball when working any square for the colors to align correctly. For example, if you want to work 3 rounds to make a smaller granny square, you will need to cut off the shades that were intended for rounds 4 and 5, then rejoin yarn to work the first 3 rounds again.

5. Is there yarn left at the beginning and end of each granny?

We have calculated approx. 4” [10 cm] extra in the amounts for the very first shade of the square and for last rnd (5th shade) of the square. We recommend using a matching solid shade of Red Heart Super Saver as the joining/seaming yarn for your granny projects.

If too much color is left at the end of a color section (at the end of the 1st round or 3rd round), pull back some stitches and slightly loosen your gauge to rework stitches and finish at the color change. You can also go up a hook size.

If too little color is left, pull back some stitches and slightly tighten your gauge to rework stitches and finish at color change. You can also try going down a hook size.

2. Can I use any flower pattern with this yarn?

To achieve the color changes and motif exactly as we've shown, you must use the motif pattern designed specifically for this yarn, taking yarn from the center of the pull-skein. The Flower Power motif pattern is provided on the ball band and is used in all the supporting patterns. Of course, feel free to experiment with your own designs!

There should be approximately a 4" [10 cm] tail to weave in at the beginning of your square before the slip knot. At the end of the square, after the 6th round is complete, at least 24" (61 cm) remains. The long tail is perfect for joining or seaming your Flower Power projects. Learn how to join your squares.

Adjust your gauge as needed while working the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds in Color 3 of the motif to maintain a 6" [15 cm] square finished size.
