    1 - 1 of 1 Question

Q: Why can't I get to 9 stitches? It says to cast on 5 sts. But then I can't get row 1 right. What am I not understanding?

A: Hello and thanks for reaching out! Without seeing your knitting or knowing how many stitches you do end up with, it's hard to know what's happening as you work the row. The row reads: K1, yo, k1, yo, place marker, k1, place marker, yo, k1, yo, k1 – 9 sts. You have a total of 4 increases for this row. I've bolded and changed the color on them. While a YO is a simple increase, I find that sometimes they go rogue in the first couple rows of a pattern (especially when there are so few stitches to start off with). Because of that I'm linking you to our video tutorial on how to do them. I'm linking it just so you can verify that you're completing them correctly. The placement for this row is such that you are putting one every other stitch. You'll knit one, increase, knit one, increase and so on until the end of the row. I like to say each stitch out loud as I work it on rows like this. It helps me be certain that I'm not going into autopilot and missing one. I hope this helps get you back on track! If it doesn't and you need more assistance don't hesitate to reach out again. If you find yourself doing that, a picture of your knitting would help us narrow down what's happening.
