SAL Bernat Study of Planet Earth Along Lessons

Earth’s inner core is the foundation of our planet and the beginning of this wonderful afghan. Just as gravity draws us towards the Earth’s core, our eyes gravitate to this afghan’s center as the focal point of the project. In the following weeks, we will build on the core with crochet layers, much like the earth’s remaining layers form around its inner core.

To begin, a gauge check is required. Adjust your hook accordingly as gauge matters as the rotation of the stitches need to work with each other. Use front and back post work to create outward ridges.

Let the inner core inspire a solid foundation for your afghan!

Earth’s outer core is a liquid layer that surrounds the inner core. Embody the Earth’s outer core by transitioning the foundation of your afghan into a hexagonal shape.

This week we find ourselves on Earth’s thickest layer, the Mantle. It lies between the Earths super hot core and the outer layer, the crust.

The Study of Planet Earth afghan embodies this thick, solid state with the bean stitch, giving the illusion of boulders puzzled together. This layer is sure to be eye popping!

Earth’s hard outer layer, the crust, is only 3 miles thick and lies at the bottom of our oceans. The crust floats above the Mantle, Earth’s thickest layer. To convey the earth’s crust, Mikey implemented back loop single crochet throughout the layer.

Oceans are necessary for human life, they create most of our oxygen and nurture over 230,000 species. They cover 90% of our planet’s surface in liquid, gas and ice states. To represent this layer in the afghan, Mikey used braided cables. They embody the churning of ocean swells and create a unique eye-popping texture.

Week six is all about the Earth’s coast. The coast is where water meets land. Some coasts are beach-like, others are carved stone with layers of erosion. The coast includes some of the highest cliffs in the world, they are so high they reach the clouds.

Portray our earth’s beautiful coast with the Larksfoot Track Stitch. This stitch requires you to turn at the end of the round in order to keep the stitch aligned. This layer will take a bit of time – but the view is so worth it!

Land gives us the ability to have fresh water, which is very important for our survival. We can go several days without food, but water is a necessity.

Finish off the Study of Planet Earth afghan with Mikey’s favorite single crochet, picot and single crochet stitch over two stitches.
