Cro-Shayley Makes a Tractor Hat

Have any little ones that love tractors? Are you in need of a crocheted tractor applique? Well look no further!

A neighbor of mine asked me to make matching tractor hats for her boys, a 2 month old and 2.5 year old. She wanted a hat with ear flaps but no tassels and a tractor embroidered on the side of the hat. She was able to measure each boy's head circumferences and gave me their measurements. The youngest's head circumference is 16" and the oldest's is 20". I was browsing some of Red Heart's baby/toddler crocheted hat patterns with ear flaps and came across the Patriotic Stripes Hat and this pattern just so happens to offer directions for a 16" and 20" head circumference. Supplies:
Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [I-9 US]
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver Grey Heather, Bright Yellow, Pa Addy Green and Black.
HAT
Using Super Saver Grey Heather, make an adjustable ring.
Round 1 (right side): Ch 2 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 11 dc in ring; join
with slip st in top of beginning ch”12 sts.
Pull gently, but firmly, on tail to tighten ring.
Round 2: Ch 2, dc in same st as join, 2 dc in each st; join with slip st in top of beginning
ch”24 sts.
Round 3: Ch 2, dc in same st as join, dc in next st, [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 11 times; join with slip st in top of beginning ch”36 sts.
Round 4: Ch 2, dc in same st as join, dc in next 2 st, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 st] 11 times; join with slip st in top of beginning
ch”48 sts.
Size Small only
Rounds 5“10: Ch 2, dc in each st; join with slip st in top of beginning ch. Do not fasten off.
Size Medium only
Round 5: Ch 2, dc in same st as join, dc in next 7 st, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 7 st] 5 times; join with slip st in top of beginning
ch”54 sts.
Rounds 6“11: Ch 2, dc in each st; join with slip st in top of beginning ch.
Do not fasten off.
Size Large only
Round 5: Ch 2, dc in same st as join, dc in next 3 st, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 st] 11 times; join with slip st in top of beginning
ch”60 sts.
Rounds 6“12: Ch 2, dc in each st; join with slip st in top of beginning ch.
Do not fasten off.
Right Earflap
Row 1 (right side): Ch 2, dc2tog, dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in next st, turn”7 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc into each st across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, [dc2tog, dc in next st] twice”5 sts. Fasten off.
Left Earflap
With right side facing, join C with slip st in 17th (19th, 22nd) st to the left of last st of right earflap.
Work same as Rows 1“3 of right earflap.

BorderRound 1 (right side): With right side facing, join Super Saver Bright Yellow with slip st in any st at back of hat, ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc evenly around working 3 sc in first and last sts of each row of each earflap; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.
Round 2: With right side facing, join Super Saver Pa Addy Green with slip st in any st at back of hat, ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in each st around; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.
TractorCh. 12 dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch.cross. Turn.
Ch. 2, dc in each dc across. Do not fasten off.

Top of Tractor
Ch. 12. Sl st in 5th dc. Fasten off and leave long tail for sewing.

Wheels
Big Wheel
Make an adjustable ring.
Ch. 2, 9 dc in ring. Change to black and Sl st in top of ch. 2.
2 sc in each dc around. Sl st in joining st. Fasten off and leave long tail for sewing.

Small Wheel
Make an adjustable ring.
Ch. 1, 9 sc in ring. Change to black and Sl st in top of ch. 1.
Sc in each sc around. Sl st in joining st. Fasten off and leave long tail for sewing.
