Q: This is not Feather & Fan. It's Old Shale.

    1 Answer

A: Based on the pattern, it resembles the Feather and Fan lace pattern more closely than Old Shale. The key feature that gives it away is the series of "K2tog" (knit two together) and "YO" (yarn over) that are worked in a specific sequence to create the signature wavy or fan-shaped pattern. Here's why: Feather and Fan typically includes a repeating section where you decrease (K2tog) and increase (YO, K1) in a set pattern, which is exactly what is happening in row 5 here. Old Shale also has a similar fan-like appearance, but it usually works the decreases and increases in slightly different intervals and doesn't typically include a sequence like “(K2tog) 3 times. (YO, K1) 6 times. (K2tog) 3 times.” So, while they're both similar lace patterns, the structure of the decreases and increases in this case points more towards Feather and Fan.

Q: In row 5 you are decreasing stitches. K2 together 3 times with only one yarn over. Where do you pick up the stitches that yo’ve just decreased? You photo here shows a ripple affect with perhaps anpurl row on the right side. That isn’t in the direction

    1 Answer

A: The YO is actually completed a total of 6 times after those 3 k2togs. The entire row reads as: K6. *(K2tog) 3 times. (Yo. K1) 6 times. (K2tog) 3 times. Rep from * to last 6 sts. K6. I've bolded all the repeats but when worked it ends up being: K6, K2tog, K2tog, K2tog, Yo, K1, Yo, K1, Yo, K1, Yo, K1, Yo, K1, Yo, K1, K2tog, K2tog, K2tog And so on until the end of the row.
